Facebook launches a version of Messenger for kids

I just read an interesting article in The Verge, apparently Facebook has now rolled out a new Facebook "Messenger" app designed for those under the age of 13 (called "Messenger Kids"). The app does not require a Facebook account (under US law, it can't) and allows parents to manually approve whoever they come in contact with. Facebook has said that it will not use the child's information for ads and that ads will not be on the service.

"Messenger Kids is primarily designed to offer video and text chat along with the types of playful masks and filters, originally popularized by Snapchat, that are now prevalent across Facebook’s many messaging products. "
